I thought we had an old book thread somewhere, but I can't find it, so I'm starting a new one. Use it like the movie thread... to talk about books you've read, favorite books, recommendations, etc. I've been reading a lot lately, which is odd considering usually I think I don't have time, but it's nice to do it right before I go to bed; it makes me sleepy LOL. I read Stephen King's "The Green Mile" for the first time, and it was exceptional - it makes me like the movie even more because the movie fit the book SO incredibly well... you'd almost think the book had been based off the movie instead of the other way around. Both are equally good. Tonight I just finished re-reading the book "A Lantern In Her Hand" by Bess Streeter Aldrich. It's an old book, written in 1928, and it was my mom's favorite when she was younger. It's soooo good. It's basically the story of the life of a pioneer woman, from her childhood all the way up to her death in old age. I would call it a pioneer romance, but the romance isn't the main story - only a part of it. I never really was crazy about pioneer books, even though I like history, but this one is excellent. It's really touching... I've spent the last three nights crying my eyes out over it because it's that much of a tearjerker, in a good way. Anyway... if you haven't read it and like that kind of stuff, it's still in print: www.amazon.com/Lantern-Hand-Bess-Streeter-Aldrich/dp/0140384286

Those don't sound familiar, but Amy and I were talking about books yesterday. Kids' books to be more exact. Did you ever read the Ramona Quimby series?

I know! The Ramona books were some of the best books I read as a kid. It was great to have a heroine who made a lot of mistakes, did the things you always wanted to do, had tantrums..., wasn't perfect, you know? And she was funny, too. They're the kind of books I will read to my kids when I get them.

I just finished two amazing books. First one is "The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn", by Robin Maxwell. An amazing historical fiction book!!! If you like the renaissance and historical fiction, this is the book for you!! It's about Queen Elizabeth I and her mother Queen Anne.
The second one is my one of my best friends' books, she lent it to me when I lent her The Secret Diary of Anne Boleyn, and it's Nicholas Sparks' "A Bend in the Road". Can I say WOW??? When I finished the book, the first thing I said was "Damn you Nicholas Sparks!" and I'm serious!!! I read from him A Walk To Remember and The Notebook, but when I read The Wedding I was disappointed in him and hadn't read anything from him till my friend lent me A Bend in the Road and I can say he got me back as a fan!!!

I've loved every Nicholas Sparks book I've read (all of them except Three Weeks with My Brother, which I'm getting for Christmas ). I'm surprised you found "The wedding" disappointing, I enjoyed it.

Don't get me wrong, "The Wedding" was a kinda sweet story, it just wasn't his best work and it didn't keep me as entertained as his previous books. I don't know, but he did an amazing job with A Bend In The Road. It was just fantastic!

Both sound great! I have quite a few Nicholas Sparks book, but "A Bend in the Road" is one of the ones I haven't read yet, so I'll have to do that! My favorite Sparks book by far is "The Guardian" - if you haven't read that one, you definitely should. It's a romance AND a suspense. I love history, so the one about Anne Boleyn and Elizabeth I sounds cool too!

I don't know, but he did an amazing job with A Bend In The Road. It was just fantastic! I thought The Wedding was really sweet, but I know what you mean. It was kind of dull to me. Actually, I felt that way about The Notebook too, probably because I'd already seen the movie when I read the book. The book was good, but I actually think the movie is a lot better. Usually I don't feel that way about movies vs. books, but I felt like the movie told the story better. I have to say, I like Nicholas Sparks' books; he tells very sweet, touching love stories. But after you've read a few of them, it kinda seems like you've read them all. I've noticed that with the last couple of his that I've read. That's why The Guardian is my favorite, cause it's a little different from the others, with the whole suspense angle.

That's kinda why I loved "A Bend In The Road", cause there's some suspense in it (a murder investigation, but I won't say anything else ) but he's more of a romance writer than anything else. I once read somewhere that if you want a great romance book, there's little room for any action/thriller/suspense and vice versa. I think that's true, with any great story you need a lot of development (plot, characters, places) and unless you have a couple thousands pages book, it's hard to accomplish lol

In that case, Julie, you'll like the Guardian. Well... I guess I like dull love stories, because I have and love all Nicholas Sparks' books. (Technically, I'm not supposed to know that I'm getting "Three weeks with my brother" for Christmas)

The books about the Boleyn are suddenly very popular these day. I have recently bought a book named The Other Boleyn Girl by Philippa Gregory. They also made a movie about it, Natalie Portman and Scarlett Johansson is starring.
I have recently read a book that takes place around 1920 till 1990s. It was about a family who moved from Rhodes(a Greek island which belonged to Ottoman Empire before WWI.) to Izmir and to my town after WWII.
I highly recommend Burnt Toast by Teri Hatcher. I loved her in Desperate Housewives but I gotta tell you, it's a book that every woman should read. I even recommended my mom to read it because she talks geniunely and very openly about her personal life, her fears, her happy moments and she gives great advice about how to give yourself the respect and love you deserve in every aspect in life.

I'm still on this reading kick, so I've been going through the books on my shelves that I bought but never actually read and finally reading them. I just finished "'Salem's Lot," and it was awesome. I started that one in high school when I was on a big Stephen King kick, and I didn't get very far in it and then got distracted with school and abandoned it and have just never gotten around to starting it again. Well, I finally did, and it was really good. There are a TON of character, and it must have been a total bitch to write - LOTS of planning required - but it was really interesting that way.
The next thing I plan to read is a fantasy book called "Fabelhaven" by Brandon Mull because he is coming to my school on Friday for an assembly, so I can get it autographed!

^Bergdorf Blondes were great! I actually like to read those kind of "chick-lit" books, they empty my mind and make me relax. I've bought another one of the same author, Debutante Divorcee, but haven't read it yet.
