I have to say, I'm not the most well known writer and I think it is partly cause I am mainly AU. But I write for me, so yeah. Honey, I write mostly romance and drama and I'm not that well known either. It's really interesting at what it takes to become "well known" ya know? I've found that a lot of the time, in my personal expierence, those writers that are so well known and that everyone loves, really aren't that great. Then again I'm super picky, but I find that a lot of the time those unknown authors are way better than the ones that everyone rushes to read. So I don't mind being not known ya know? It's a nice group of people to be a part of. You go girl, write for you!

I put it depends because I like AUs, but only when they're realistic. I read one where they were all players on a baseball team and really liked that one.
I guess my picking "it depends" isn't fair. Because if you asked me if I like fan fiction as a whole I would answer "it depends" because there is some that I don't like....

I have to admit, it took me a couple of tries to get into it, cause of the AU/baseball thing, but once I did I really liked it. Yeah, I should have made more specific choices on the poll... less black and white love it or hate it LOL.

I have to say, I'm not the most well known writer and I think it is partly cause I am mainly AU. But I write for me, so yeah. Yay, I'm glad someone voted one way or the other finally! LOL (Although I probably would have voted "Depends" too... I should have made those answers a little less black or white LOL.) And you rock for saying that. One thing that gets on my nerves is when people who write genres that are not as much in the mainstream constantly b*tch about not getting any feedback or recognition. I think it's too bad that some really talented writers go unnoticed because they write AU or fantasy or sci-fi or whatever, but that's a choice they make. If they're that desperate for "fame," they could always sell out and write a teeny romance LOL. But the point is, if you write for yourself, you can write what you want to write and be okay with whatever recognition you get for it. Feedback is awesome, but it's not the only thing that should drive someone to write. And that's why I will very likely go against the 75+% of people that voted for the non-AU story idea on my site and write the AU after BMS is done. I pout about it sometimes but hey, I did it to myself lol. I also think its really funny how well known I'm not lol, seeing as how many collabs I do lol. And yes! Go against them! Write what you feel you want to. I read both ends of it. BMS/Broken are listed among the few romances I read (maybe its cause its angsty too though) so feel special .

Hate is such a strong word, but I will never read one. I attempted once, and I never got into it. I like them as The Boys, and I don't see them as anyone else. lol So I'm sorry Julie, I probably won't read your next fic. I'm sure it will be good, but its just not my type of thing.

I never really finished reading an AU story. Maybe I'll give it a try with Julie's story, but it's really not my type of thing...

I like AU's because it shows what the guys might be like, given their personalities, in another profession or life situation. I've read some good ones where people have captured the essence of their personalities and relationships like in Between The Lines. I like to imagine what they would be like if they weren't the backstreet boys that's why I tend to gravitate towards them and write them.
I mean I know what their story is as backstreet boys and sometimes when I read stories where they are still the boys I have a hard time differentiating between what someone has written and what they are really like. You guys may think I'm being rediculous but I really feel like the lines start to blur a little as far what I read in a story and what happens in real life, or maybe thinking what if this is really going on? I also tend to read a lot of similar plot lines in stories where they are still the boys and there will be negative commentary on one or more of the boys that I can't help but think the author really thinks is going on. Like the whole Brian betrayed Nick by getting married and not hanging out with him anymore because his wife doesn't want him to. It rubs me the wrong way so if I see that coming in a story I stop reading it. I know people will say it is just for dramatic reasons but I can't help but think that fans really belive that is what is going on. And I really don't want to debate with anyone on this issue I'm just telling you how I feel.
I don't know if anyone else ever feels the way I do, maybe about one of your favorite boys or find it hard to differentiate between real life and fiction life. Or maybe I'm just crazy and too sensitive, which is true. It's just my oppinion.
I'm not saying I don't enjoy reading stories where the boys are still themselves but I tend to gravitate towards AU because I think if done well they are a lot of fun. I think they can be creative and imaginative. Really like any fan fiction there is the good, the bad, and the ugly.
Ok I'll shut up now. This was not intended to offend just get some stuff off my chest. I also tend to not beable to control my typing cause I can't see who I'm talking to and censor my thoughts.

^ Thanks for that post! I can see what you're saying, and I'm glad there are a few AU fans on here. AU isn't my favorite genre, but now that I'm thinking about writing one, I appreciate people that like them or are at least willing to give them a chance! I've read a few, like Between the Lines and Happenstance, that I absolutely ADORE. And writing Code Blue has always been fun. So I have nothing against AUs, even though I generally prefer the "BSB" kind.

I can't see all the responses it says that there are too many connections *shrugs* So yeah excuse me if I say something that has been said or the like.
I am an AU writer and so I said I like them. For me, like Rose, they are comfort characters. People I am familiar with enough to write about in differing plots. They are still the boys to me whether they are a part of the group or not.
I think the only one I have where they aren't in the group at all is Darkness of Vampires, Wulf's Bane Nick is in BSB but he's in an other world so it doesn't matter. I have both DOV: Antigone and Wulf's Bane marked as both BSB AU and Original Fiction. if they were just Original fiction, people wouldn't read and give feedback as much ... just having BSB in there, someone will read/review the story. *shrugs*
I don't know if I agree that you have to keep them similar to how they are in life, I pulled a twist in DOV that is WAY outside a couple of the boys characters, but again it's a vampire fic and you can't really have a religious vampire now can you :-D
I think it's all in how the story is written. If it's well written then AU isn't bad, but it's the badly written AU ... well badly written stories in general, those make me gag.

I'm all for it if a person wanted to write AU. Though, I tend to lean towards non-AU because that's what most fan-fic's are. But, I've read some pretty good AU's in my fan-fic reading career. I guess overall I'd say.......... I dunno, I guess... hmm....? Depends, because I don't LOVE them persay, but I don't mind a good AU every once in awhile. As for Julie writing one, I'd say go for it! Anything you write is better than any author and/or published book out there!

Anything you write is better than any author and/or published book out there! That's a pretty hefty compliment - thank you!! It's not true LOL, but I'm flattered.
