What do you think of AU stories? (AU meaning Alternate Universe, stories where the Boys aren't "The Backstreet Boys" - they may be doctors, soldiers, secret agents, space fighters, just regular people, etc.)
I guess I'm putting up this poll more for me, to get an idea of where my reader base lies, cause I would really like to write an AU (besides CB), even though I don't normally like them, but there seems to be a strong bias against them, depending on where you go.

HAH! I'm first!! Hahahaha. I like AU stories to an extent, mostly because it's fun to envision what they guys would've done if they weren't a part of the Backstreet Boys. It kinda depends on how you write the characters, though, because some fields of expertise for each of the guys would fit them more than others. I dunno...then it also depends on the situations they're put in during the story. I personally prefer stories in which they're still the BSB, but things happen to them and stuff. Like Broken and BMS. (They're my absolute favorites, can ya tell? Hahaha.) But I also loved the Nick & Liz series and the Mizpah stories. I think I'm more drawn to angst/drama stories. I did, however, read a Kevin story...can't remember the name of it right now...you know how my memory is, Julie. Anyway, the Kevin story I read was one where he was some kind of detective or a cop trying to track someone that had been abducting and murdering children. The criminal kidnapped Kevin's youngest son and put his oldest son in the hospital, and then Kevin discovered that his father was involved in a very bizarre twist. If anyone can think of the name of this story, please tell me because I'd love to read it again. I think I found it on AbsoluteChaos, but I don't remember. But yeah, there's my opinion on AU stories. And Julie, you disappeared from MSN again. lol Every time I see you on, you're away. Come back!

I said It depends. I enjoy reading AU's as long as the guys have their same basic personalities and traits. I have a thing about them being brothers but that's the sap in me. I love reading them as brothers lol But when a story is SO AU that I can't even tell it's a BSB story, once again that's me saying why not just write an original fic and not label it as a BSB AU? Aww and thanks Dew Freak that is Protect and Serve.

I said it depends also because i think it really depends how they actually tell the characters. I don't remember reading to much AU fiction except the Wilting Malibu one recently and they were just a bunch of high school students there -kinda like OC stuff was going on. Anyway, as long as the characters are well-developed and the plot is good, AU stories are fine with me. And i sometimes like it when the characters are labelled different than what we know of them, such as Nick not being the dumb one or Kevin the serious. But then again, i agree with mare at the part of saying why not just write an original fic instead of labelling them as BSB AU. Ok, i'm pretty lost now so i will finish it.

I also put it depends. I like AUs, where it's not way over the top, and I also happen to want the story to be original.

Thanks guys!!! Mare, I loved that story. I don't remember, though, is it finished or still in the works? I read it quite a while ago, so I don't remember what chapter I left off on. I'll have to read it again. lol

I said depends. I'm really not an AU fan at all, though I have read one or two I like, so I really can't say that I don't like them or the genre as a whole, but generally it's not my cup of tea. I'd never go and intentionally look for an AU story to read.

Yeah, that's how it is with me. I think being a Backstreet Boy is too much of a part of the boys to not include it.

I adore them, but thats also because I write them. I like reading both though. Personally, as an only AU writer (inching to nonau with my romance fic Just Another Day...cause the boys are famous, but as a rock group. Close lol), I write the boys in there because to me, they're my comfort zone. Sure it could be an original fiction. But at the same time I want opinions and readers, and I like BSB. So why not throw them in? Just tossing an AU writers opinion in.
I have to say, I'm not the most well known writer and I think it is partly cause I am mainly AU. But I write for me, so yeah.

I have to say, I'm not the most well known writer and I think it is partly cause I am mainly AU. But I write for me, so yeah. Yay, I'm glad someone voted one way or the other finally! LOL (Although I probably would have voted "Depends" too... I should have made those answers a little less black or white LOL.) And you rock for saying that. One thing that gets on my nerves is when people who write genres that are not as much in the mainstream constantly bitch about not getting any feedback or recognition. I think it's too bad that some really talented writers go unnoticed because they write AU or fantasy or sci-fi or whatever, but that's a choice they make. If they're that desperate for "fame," they could always sell out and write a teeny romance LOL. But the point is, if you write for yourself, you can write what you want to write and be okay with whatever recognition you get for it. Feedback is awesome, but it's not the only thing that should drive someone to write. And that's why I will very likely go against the 75+% of people that voted for the non-AU story idea on my site and write the AU after BMS is done.

An AU story from Julie! Yay! Your excitement is appreciated. ;D Besides The Other Child, which is a piece of crap, and CB, which is just different, I don't really have any AUs, so I've been wanting to write one, and I have an idea I really like that I've modified to the point where it really only works as an AU because the main characters are going to be in college. So it will still have all the Boys in it, but they'll be just regular people, college students.
