I can totally relate to this. I tend not to tell people that I read/write fanfic, not because I'm ashamed of it, but because I don't want to go to the trouble of explaining it to people who probably won't understand. Here's my argument though, Julie If you don't mind I'll use BMS for an example, if you went in and changed all the BSB related stuff, names of the guys, band etc, you would be left with a well-written non-fanfic. So, it's not as if we couldn't write normal stories if we wanted to. BSB just inspires us. I think one of the reasons fanfic gets a bad rap sometimes is because some ppl assume it's written by obsessive aka teeny fans with no lives which isn't the case most of the time. sry for the long post. I felt like ranting. Cheers

That's all it is. I could write a non-Bsb fic if I had an idea for one, but I really don't right now, cause my brain is just trained to think of Bsb ideas, cause, like you said, they inspire me! And these days, it seems like the majority of Bsb fanfic authors are past their teenage years or close to it, so the teeny thing doesn't even fit anymore.

I can definitely empathize with this one. Let me share an example with you guys that actually happened only 2 days ago.
I was in the basement with my friend and her parents, and she was asking them if she could go to the library to get some files from a disk. Her mom asked her what they were, and before she could get a word out, her dad spoke up saying "Just her stupid Backstreet Boys shit." They went into this whole long lecture about how they thought she would've grown up by now and stopped concentrating on boy band shit like a little kid. They do this to her every time the Backstreet Boys are mentioned in any way, whether it be a new album coming out, a tour, something on TV, a website, a story...hell, even if one of their names is mentioned, they start badgering her mercilessly about how she needs to grow up and get over it. Not a day goes by that they don't roll their eyes at her just for being a hardcore fan.
I can't tell you how much this behavior and lack of respect for her infuriates me. It seems as though being a Backstreet Boys fan is thoroughly frowned upon and wrong in every way, yet being a fan of any other musician is more than acceptable. My stand on it is that these people don't see their daughter bitching at them for being fans of Tom Petty or Journey or The Eagles or Lynyrd Skynyrd or anyone else like that. Even being a fan of the rap artists I despise is more acceptable to them than being a fan of the Backstreet Boys. I strongly feel that this discrimination has to stop, but I don't know how to start anything to make it happen. If it's even possible to try. The way I see it, discrimination of sex, skin color, religion, sexual preferences, style preferences, political views, and everything else like that is deemed unacceptable by society, as well as discrimination by musical tastes between any genre not including pop. Honestly, it looks like the only acceptable discrimination in this country is that against listening to the Backstreet Boys. (I just noticed how many times in the last few sentences that I've used the word 'discrimination'...oops. lol) It seems as though people aren't really against fan fiction, they're just against the very idea of the Backstreet Boys and anything that goes along with them. These are my views on it.
Okay, well, I could go on and on and on for hours about the issue, as I'm EXTREMELY passionate about people being free to make their own choices without fear of rejection by society because of those choices. But I think I'll bite my tongue and leave it at what I've written thus far. If anyone wants to continue this particular discussion, send me a private message and we can talk through that. I'm more than willing to unwind and release my passions about it, just as long as I know I'm not gonna annoy anyone by rambling on and on about the same things. Talk to you guys in another thread about another topic! lol
