I'm trying to add to my story and I'm having a lot of difficulty with this, because when I last added to it, I stopped writing with what sounded like an ending to that part, which is what I wanted, except, nothing got accomplished in the story with what was written. So basically, I'm trying to start the next part of the story, when the LAST part wasn't a complete thought/part. If anyone has ANY idea what I'm talking about, have you ever had that happen? Because it's rather annoying if you ask me.

I mean, nothing real important happened in the last part I had written. The characters accomplished nothing when I wanted them too. Darn my characters for not cooperating! lol. Anyways, when I started writing the next part, it was quite difficult, because the part before it didn't feel complete.
Does that make more sense?

Okay, I'm seriously rewording this whole thread, because I am desperate to know if this has happened to anyone else and I'm stuck on what to do when this happens.
I started a story. When I was adding onto it one time, I didn't add anything that was important to the story. I didn't have the characters do anything important or anything to help move the story along. So then, when I tried to add to it some more awhile later, I wasn't sure how I should start, and I wasn't sure what I should have happen next. I got through it, but I'm still kind of iffy on the previous part where nothing happened. I'm not sure if I should go back and rewrite it, leave it alone, or just change a few things. You get my drift? Has anyone ever had this happen before? If so, what'd you do to solve this little problem?

I kinda get what you're saying. If that part had absolutely no purpose, then maybe you should just scrap it or re-write it. But if it helped to develop the characters or something like that, even if it didn't really further the plot, then it has some sort of purpose. Sometimes you need that filler stuff.
As for starting the next part, that's always hard when you don't leave a place to pick up from at the end of the previous chapter. You need to figure out what you want to have happen next, and THEN worry about how to start that part. It might come more naturally when you know where you're going with it.

See, it's really weird, I already wrote the next part, and it went very quickly; lots of inspiration and all. The problem I have with it is, I'm not so sure it fits with THIS part of the story. It fits a lot better as something that happened a couple years ago in the story, but if I switched it to THAT, then I would still have to rewrite it, because one of the characters wouldn't have been able to be at this place back then. Geez, maybe I should try writing numerous versions of it and see which parts fit together best...? I think I'll try that. As for the previous part, I don't know. It goes hand in hand with the current part (the part after it). I guess I don't really have a problem with the previous part anymore. I think my main problem is the chronological order of everything. It's really screwed up. I'm trying to write this current part, but it would fit better with the part from a couple years ago... I think I'll just see if I can't rewrite it, lol. Sorry, rambling

You could always do like you said and try several different writings of it. If you'd like help, I'm willing to read through what you have and offer suggestions or just make sure everything fits. Let me know if youre interested!

uh... *little thought bubble appears next to head that shows the outline of the story* *pops thought bubble with pencil* Thank you for the offer, but are you sure you want your eyes to cross and your brain to be jumbled with confusion of the order in which things happened in this story? lol. If you have time and wouldn't mind your brain being jumbled and eyes crossing, then I'd be more than happy to show you!

uh... okay. It may take a few minutes (or hours...) lol. I'll have to explain the whole story or else nothing will make sense, lol. So, you may end up getting it tomorrow, because I have youth group at church in a half hour. I'll try though!

Not sure how often you check your e-mail, so I thought I'd let you know that I e-mailed you yesterday, Veronica. Take your time, you don't have to look at it right away.

Maybe what you wrote just doesn't fit as a beginning of a story, not to say that it isn't good and that you shouldn't hang on to it. I know you mentioned you have a hard time writing full stories and instead write scences, that's totally my problem too, my suggestion would be either rework so that "more is accomplished" or simply hang on to what you wrote and see if it fits in later on.

Thanks Shauna! Yeah, I'm thinking about rewriting the part. Veronica's looking everything over and is going to try and give me some suggestions, so I'll wait until she does that.
