I've been re-reading Cover Me With Dreams, which I've decided is the best fanfic I've ever read LOL - it doesn't matter how many times I've read it; it still makes me laugh, cry, "aww!" in delight, and keep reading in interest.
This has got to be about the fifth time I've read it, at least, and I just noticed something cool about the author, Heidi's, writing style. She never uses dialogue tags like "he said," "she replied," etc. Never. In the entire story (at least as far as I've read while paying attention to this), which has plenty of dialogue, those words are never used. The dialogue is just spaced out in between sentences that describe the actions of the characters, and somehow you always know who is talking.
It's such a subtle technique that you might never even notice the absence of those tags, but I think it's really cool that she was able to do that. There's other things I really like about her writing style, but that is one of them.
I don't think it's necessarily a bad things to use the dialogue tags; I know JK Rowling has been criticized for using too much of the "he said, she said" and too many adverbs (i.e. "he said slowly"), and she does use a lot of them, but I think she's an incredible writer. It just depends. But it does take skill to write a whole story without any of that, so good job Heidi LOL.
