Do we have a Titanic appreciation thread? I know we have a Leo one... we probably could use a Titanic one. Anyway, I've got Titanic on the brain cause I'm pulling together a Titanic unit to do with my class for reading starting next week. As part of it, they're each going to get the name of a passenger, and they'll do research to find info about their person. So I've been making a list of 26 passengers that are both interesting and have some variety - all classes, variety of ages, some who lived and some who died, etc. I used to be quite the Titanic buff, so I had fun doing it, but it took forever!!! I already had some of it done before today, but I thought I'd put the movie on for background noise and finish it up today... and it took me the duration of the movie to get done! Seriously, 3 and a half hours almost, I sat here and researched and made stuff for the unit! Crazy LOL. Should be fun though!

LMAO!!! Loves it. So I found out, there was actually a J. Dawson on board the Titanic who died. His name was Joseph Dawson, not Jack, but he was 23, same age as Leo was when Titanic came out. He's buried in Nova Scotia, where a lot of the Titanic victims were buried, and his headstone just says J. Dawson. Apparantly after Titanic came out, the teenage girls flocked there and put flowers and pictures of Leo LOL. There's a whole article about him here: www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/the-real-jack-dawson.html

Wow! Sounds like an awesome unit, Julie. Do the kids know about it yet? Do they sound interested?

They don't yet, nope, but I think they'll enjoy it. The Titanic is one of those things that kids just find interesting... and for those who don't, I think giving them a "character" in the whole disaster scenario will suck them into it.

Well, we started our unit this week, and the kids are loving it so far! When I had them draw names, they wanted to know if anyone got to be Jack or Rose... LMAO. I had to explain that Jack and Rose were just made up, but that a lot of the other names they would draw were in the movie. They're having fun researching them though.

Awesome!! Are you taking the students to the computer lab to do their research or do you have books about the Titanic in your classroom?
So you didn't have Joseph Dawson included?

They're using the computers in my room as a station during our reading group time, and I also have some book sets checked out that we're reading.
No, I didn't include Joseph Dawson... I ended up finding enough other people, especially guys, that were more interesting.

Cool. I remember just using the computers in our classrooms throughout elementary school for projects. We had a certain day of the week that out class was scheduled to use the computer lab each week. Is that what the school you teach at does?
Oh okay. I noticed that the real J. Dawson wasn't all that interesting. Did you find a different person for each student to research or did you end up having some duplicates?

Yeah, we have the option of doing it that way, or just reserving the lab when we need it. That's usually what I do, cause I don't always have a good project for them to work on in the computer lab. I've got five computers in my room, so I just always make that a station when we do station work.
Yeah, I found a different person for each kid. The guys were pretty easy; the women, not so much.

Oh, see when I was in elementary school, they had each class in the computer lab once a week and had us use specific programs to help us practice typing or other fun educational games and so we could learn how to use different htings on the computer.
Wow, they really have enough information about a bunch of people who were on the Titanic?

Same here. I'm not sure why we don't have computer class at my school... I think they should, but it's probably just one more scheduling issue they don't want to mess with in a large school. I think they get that at the junior high, too. Yeah, there's actually this whole website, www.encyclopedia-titanica.org/, that has a ton of info. You can look up any passenger, and it will give you at least a brief bio. Some have a lot more info than others, obviously, but there's something for everyone. Very cool!

Oh God I LOVE this movie!!! I think it's really great and creative that you did that! It's really exciting that your students were enjoying it. I remember we had to do a presentation back in High school and I chose to talk about Titanic. I got some amazing information and pictures and was soo excited. and when I was done they were like "Oh that's nice ." ..... and i was like "is that it?". I really wished they were more enthusiastic about it Lol! Anywhoo, I it's been a veerrry long time since I posted here and you probably wouldn't remember me but I'm really glad I came back to this forum.

Aww, welcome back! Are you following me on Twitter? I didn't know who you were at first, but now I recognize the name. Anyway, thanks! It's partly selfish because of course *I* think it's interesting; I considered myself quite the little Titanic buff after the movie came out, when I was obsessed and wanted to find out everything I could. But I think most kids find it interesting, just like any disaster, and having them take the perspective of a real person has really worked out well for getting them interested and involved in it. Some of them can't remember that Mexico is a country, not a state, or how to subtract, but they can rattle off all this random info about the person they researched. It's very cute; I'm thrilled with how they're enjoying it! That's one nice thing about teaching younger kids; they show more enthusiasm for stuff like that than I think most high schoolers would (even if they really do find it interesting... they might have that "too cool" attitude to show it).
