Is anyone here a big fan of historical fiction? Fanfic or otherwise? If so, are there certain time periods you prefer to read/write about?

I love writing about the late 1800's early 1900's that time period just is so special to me for some reason. I just love how everything went about during that time.

Well, I have these two Brian AU novel ideas, and both of them are historically based. One is actually set in the late 1940s/early 50s, and the other is set in present day, but has a Civil War era subplot. The Civil War one is the one I would like to tackle first, and I have a lot of things planned out for it, but I'm having a helluva time actually getting started.
I'm weird because I LOVE history... I minored in it in college, and the History channel is my favorite channel... but I've never been a big fan of historical fiction. I love historical movies, even the ones that are more fiction than fact, but I've never really gotten into reading historical fiction books. I loved the American Girl books when I was little, but that's about it. I read the first two Little House on the Prairie books, but never really got into the whole series... I had some of those Dear America diary books that I read, but again, not my favorite (I'm not really into the journal-style books either though). As an adult, I've tried reading Gone With the Wind, which I never finished... I'm now plugging slowly through The Other Boleyn Girl, which my grandma said she couldn't put down, but I've been reading it for at least a month off and on, and I'm only on page 100 something LOL. The only historical novel I can remember reading in recent years and really enjoying is one called A Lantern in Her Hand. I've never been into reading historical fanfics either.
So... while I like these ideas and have had fun researching for them, I'm just dreading actually writing them, the historical parts at least LOL. It will be a good challenge for me, assuming I actually write one or both of them, but wow, I wish I had some inspiration.
I just spent $40 on Barnes&Noble.com on books that I hope might get the old muse in the right mindset... I bought "North and South" and "Love and War," which I've always wanted to read, cause I love the miniseries... they're Civil War novels, so hopefully that will give me some inspiration. Then I bought a book called "How to Write a Damn Good Novel" and "Chicken Soup for the Writer's Soul." I really wanna be productive this summer LOL.

I can't say I care for historical fiction particularly, but Julie, you know I'll read anything you write.

I love history, the wars, and I love everything you write just like estrella. That story would so appeal to me, it does. I'd love for you to write one like that! You've got me all excited now, Julie.

I've been doing some more planning on the Civil War-ish one. Two of my Barnes & Noble books came in, and I'm reading "How to Write a Damn Good Novel," as well as the book that pretty much inspired this whole idea back in, like, 2001, and I'm getting excited about the story. That said, I still am struggling with the historical part. If reading North and South doesn't inspire me, then I'll probably try one of two things: Figure out how to make the story work without writing actual historical scenes, or beg for a co-author LOL.

Another good book about the Civil War is "Killer Angels."

Ah, I've read that book before! Sophomore composition class in high school. I had completely forgotten about it until now.
The idea is not actually about the war itself; it just takes place during that era. The main setting would be a Southern plantation and that whole lifestyle.

Sure!
I'm gonna try to set myself a writing goal every day. Yesterday, it was to write my 00Carter part for our next episode, and I did. So today my goal is CB. If I can accomplish what I want to with that today, then I'll be 2 for 2 LOL.
