This isn't so much tricks of the trade, but quirky things you do when you write. Do you have any weird writing habits or routines? Do you have to be in a certain place or have the room a certain way when you write? Do you listen to certain music? Do you act out your parts or say your dialogue out loud?
Post some of your writing quirks here! ;D

I talk out all of my dialogue, and when I write Glitz and Glamour or when I wrote Just Another Day, I totally lowered my voice when I wrote in Nick's perspective. I sometimes paced cause he's a lil ADHD and sometimes gets a little too energetic lol
I also have soundtracks for each of my stories lol

I listen to Pirates of the Caribbean music at inappropriate times in my writing. Like, at one point, I had the entire soundtrack of the first movie downloaded, and I played it over and over again while I was writing those post-choppage chapters in the third part of Broken. It amused me. I hadn't even seen the movie then either! (I'm now listening to music from the third movie while writing BMS; that's what made me think of it.)
I put in my Dumbo DVD and play the "Baby Mine" scene to make myself cry and get in the mood for writing an emotional part. I don't think I've even watched that DVD all the way through since I've had it because it makes me cry, but I've watched just that scene dozens of times - and cried every time LOL.
I randomly get up and walk around while I'm writing. I also stop in mid-sentence to get on this forum, AbsoluteChaos, LD, or any other random place. That's why I'm better off just disconnecting my internet when I write - I would be less distracted.
Okay, that's all for now; I've stalled long enough. Off to write, but I've got plenty more where those came from!

^ I do that too! Randomly getting up and walking around, look myself in the mirror, surf the net, talk on the phone, and then get back and write some more. Sometimes distracting myself from what i'm currently doing is the best concentration for me. Weird, I know. And I tend to write when i want to stop thinking about a certain subject, usually my love life. LOL. When I'm getting too depressed, I sit down and write. Hmm can't think of more right now.

LOL it's definitely a nice distraction. It doesn't work for me all the time, but when I can just think about nothing but BMS or whatever I'm working on, and forget everything else going on in my real life, that is SO nice...

^So true. And then when you go back to reality, you have this one second of "Where am I?" moment. At least I do. ;D

I listen to my radio and it helps me. I put myself there in where I want them to be. lol

Uh... sorry Julie! I've been one of your distractions lately, lol.
Anywho, I act out scenes WAY before I write them. Sometimes I pretend I AM one of the characters (which, you'll notice that a lot of my characters are based off of me if I ever show you guys some of my stories... lol).
Something else is, I can only think about this stuff late at night and I'll play the scene in my head over and over and over; fixing little things here and there like directing, lol. A lot of times, I'll be so into it that I won't even notice that 3 hours went by and it's like 2 in the morning, lol.
But yeah, I basically put myself into the characters shoes and act as if I am them.

I always talk through my dialogue and also click on and off the story all day long. I might write a paragraph or two but then stop to play a game or watch TV or something and then come back to it and write a little more.
I can't listen to a thing when i'm writing. The TV can't be on and no music at all. lol I can't chat either, when i'm actually writign I have to totally concentrate on that.

There are only a couple of albums I can listen to and not be distracted. Never Gone and Welcome Home are the two I was thinking of. They actually kind of force me to day dream, lol. I have NO idea why, but they do.
But yeah, other than that, it should be completely silent. Which doesn't happen often in my house, which is why I'm up late a lot of the time; no one else is up to make noise, so that's the only time I have to really get into my stories.

Hmmm, I usually write on Monday evenings and I always have to have music playing. I usually can't focus without music.

*cracks up* Here's something else I've found that helps when writing. Sit on the floor in the bathroom with the fan on and the door locked. SERIOUSLY! The fan is like a white-noise, so it's not distracting (to ME anywho, lol). Of course, I can't do that, because family would get annoyed. *thinks aloud* Of course... I could go in my parents bathroom... I don't think they would mind that. But then again, it's really cramped in there... lol.

Hello, I'm new. But what I just started my first story and the first thing i do is make sure i have some time to spare and that I'm not to tired. I have to make sure that I will be able to focus. I am pretending I am the charactor, and i have to close my eyes and act out everything that is happening at the moment, then I write it down. Having no noise helps me focua more, but with this story that im writing i play a couple BSB songs so that my mind is on them.

You just reminded me, Karina, that whenever I act out my scenes, I tend to stare off into space a lot, lol.
